Fertility Treatment Tax Credits

In Canada, you may be eligible to claim medical expenses, including fertility treatments, through the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC) on both your Federal and Provincial (Ontario) annual tax returns.

To qualify, expenses must be paid within any 12-month period (not just fertility-related expenses). Only the portion not reimbursed by extended health plans can be claimed.

Eligible Medical Expenses

Allowable fertility medical expenses on your income tax may include:

  • Assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures (e.g., ICSI, sperm extraction, IVF, egg freezing).
  • Frozen storage fees for eggs, sperm, or embryos.
  • Donor eggs, sperm, or surrogacy-related expenses.
  • Prescribed medications (with a DIN #) required for fertility treatments.
  • Non-OHIP-covered medical tests and laboratory procedures (including PGT).
  • Materials needed to administer prescribed medications (e.g., needles, syringes).
  • Services from approved healthcare providers (e.g., naturopaths, acupuncturists, psychologists).

    Ineligible Medical Expenses

Medical expenses that are often ineligible to be claimed on your tax return may include:

  • Over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements.
  • Insurance premiums and cosmetic procedures.
  • General health services (e.g., gym memberships, massages).
  • Tax Credit Calculation

    Federal Tax Credit Formula:

  • Calculate 3% of your net income (A * 0.03 = A1).
  • Compare A1 with $2,759 (2024 threshold) and use the lower amount (A2).
  • Subtract A2 from your eligible medical expenses (B - A2 = X).
  • Multiply X by the combined federal and provincial rates (X * (0.15 + 0.0505) = METC).
  • Example Calculation (Ontario Resident)

  • Net Income (A): $100,000
  • Eligible Expenses (B): $20,000
  • $100,000 * 0.03 = $3,000
  • Compare $3,000 and $2,759 – use $2,759.
  • $20,000 - $2,759 = $17,241.
  • $17,241 * (0.15 + 0.0505) = $3,534.41.
  • Total Tax Credit: $3,534.41 (non-refundable).
  • Ontario Provincial Tax Credit

    Example Calculation

  • Eligible expenses can also be claimed for an additional 20% provincial credit (up to $5,000 credit).

  • Tips for Claiming Medical Expenses

    Helpful Tips

  • Use the TRIO expense tracker to keep a record throughout the year.
  • Save all receipts and request a year-end printout from the TRIO pharmacy.
  • Include all medical and dental expenses when filing.
  • Be organized in case of an audit – keep copies of all submitted receipts.
  • IVF Insurance Coverage

Many private insurance plans offer coverage for fertility treatments, including IVF. However, coverage can vary significantly between providers and plans. Some plans may cover diagnostic testing. Meanwhile, others may include medication costs or treatment procedures.

Currently, TRIO does not direct bill insurance companies for fertility treatments. Patients must pay for services upfront and submit claims for reimbursement.

You can request a detailed receipt from TRIO after payment to submit to your insurance provider. Keep copies of all documentation for your records and future claims.

    • Ask your insurance provider these important questions:
    • Does my plan cover fertility medications?
    • What specific fertility procedures are covered?
    • Is there a lifetime maximum for fertility treatments?
    • Are there any exclusions I should know about?
    • Do I need pre-authorization for certain treatments?

Consider coordinating benefits if you and your partner both have insurance coverage. This strategy can maximize your overall reimbursement for fertility expenses. Additionally, always review your policy details carefully before starting treatment to avoid unexpected costs.

    Associated Costs of Fertility Treatment

Fertility treatments involve various costs beyond the main procedures. Knowing these expenses ahead of time can help with financial planning.

    *

    Egg Freezing Costs

Egg freezing at TRIO costs $8,600 per cycle for the procedure and associated services.

This includes monitoring appointments, blood tests, ultrasounds, and the egg retrieval procedure.

Medication costs range from $5,000 to $10,000+ depending on your personalized protocol. These medications stimulate egg production and prepare your body for the procedure.

Storage fees also apply after the initial freezing process. TRIO offers complimentary storage for the first year. Yearly storage fees of $600 apply after the initial complimentary period. These fees maintain your eggs in our state-of-the-art facility with 24/7 monitoring.

    IVF Costs

Non-funded IVF cycles at TRIO start at $13,000 for the complete treatment package. This includes monitoring, egg retrieval, sperm preparation, and embryo culture and freezing. Additionally, medication costs for IVF range from $5,000 to $10,000+, depending on your protocol.

Depending on your protocol, embryo transfer costs range from $1,250 to $2,750. These fees include monitoring appointments and the transfer procedure itself.

Ontario funds one IVF cycle for eligible patients under age 43 with a valid health card. This government program covers core IVF services but not electronic witnessing, medications or protocol-related add-ons.

    Embryo Storage Costs

TRIO provides complimentary embryo storage for the first six months after freezing. After this period, storage fees are $50 per month. Our on-site lab features sophisticated temperature controls and security systems. All storage tanks are monitored around the clock by our experienced team.

Each patient receives a unique identification number and barcoding for accurate tracking. This system ensures your embryos are always properly identified and secure.

Embryos can be stored indefinitely with our cryopreservation techniques.

    Other Fertility Treatment Cost Considerations

PGT-A testing (formerly called PGS) costs $2,200 for the biopsy plus $425 per embryo tested. This genetic screening identifies chromosomally normal embryos before transfer.

Additional technologies like Magenta ($400 first cycle, $200 subsequent), ZyMot ($250), and AIM ($450) are all offered at TRIO. Your doctor will discuss all the benefits and reasons they may be considered for your individual treatment protocol.

Keep in mind, as well, that all TRIO fees must be paid before starting the stimulation phase. TRIO accepts credit cards, bank drafts, Beautifi financing, and cheques, with cash accepted up to $2,000.
