Understanding Your Ovarian Reserve

At TRIO, we know that every fertility journey is unique. Understanding your ovarian reserve—the number and quality of eggs remaining in your ovaries—can be an important step in making informed decisions about your care. Ovarian reserve naturally declines over time, but the rate and impact are different for everyone. Our goal is to provide you with clarity and support as you navigate your options.

Whether you’re preparing for IVF, considering egg freezing, or simply seeking answers about your reproductive health, this calculator is designed to help you and your care team plan your next steps.

Egg Quantity

People with ovaries are born with about one million eggs. This number decreases steadily throughout life. Each menstrual cycle, around 1,000 eggs are lost—even though only one is typically ovulated. By age 37, the average ovarian reserve drops to about 25,000 eggs.

Egg Quality

Egg quality is just as important as quantity. Higher-quality eggs increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy. Generally, egg quality is best under age 35, but fertility treatment options remain available and effective for many people after this age.

Fertility and Ovarian Reserve

Fertility is influenced by both the number and quality of eggs. While age is a key factor, everyone’s path to parenthood is different. Understanding your ovarian reserve can help you and your TRIO care team create a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your goals.

We know that this process can feel overwhelming. At TRIO, you are never alone. Our team is here to answer your questions, provide expert guidance, and support you every step of the way.

Navigating Your Options

The most fertile years are typically in your 20s and early 30s. Fertility declines gradually with age, with a more noticeable decrease after 35.

Options like egg freezing (fertility preservation) and IVF can help preserve or enhance your chances of pregnancy.

If you have questions about your ovarian reserve or want to discuss your fertility options, our team at TRIO Fertility is here for you. Speak with a Care Navigator to learn more about your personalized treatment plan.

How Ovarian Reserve is Assessed at TRIO

Understanding your ovarian reserve is a crucial step in personalizing your fertility journey. At TRIO, we use a comprehensive approach to assess both the quantity and quality of your eggs.

1

Initial Medical Consultation

Your journey begins with a detailed discussion with our fertility specialists about your medical history, cycles, and family-building goals. This helps us tailor the most relevant tests for your unique situation.

2

Blood Test for Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH)

A simple blood test measures your AMH levels, which reflect your remaining egg supply. This test can be done at any point in your cycle and provides a good indicator of your ovarian reserve.

3

Blood Test for FSH and Estradiol (E2)

Typically done on day three of your menstrual cycle, these blood tests help assess how your ovaries are functioning. High FSH levels can sometimes suggest a lower reserve, while Estradiol is measured alongside for accurate interpretation.

4

Transvaginal Ultrasound for Antral Follicle Count (AFC)

During an ultrasound, we count the small follicles in your ovaries. Each contains an immature egg, and the AFC provides a direct visual estimate of your current egg supply and how your ovaries might respond to treatment.

5

Personalized Review & Treatment Plan

Your TRIO fertility specialist will review all results with you, explaining what your AMH, FSH, and AFC numbers mean. Together, we'll develop a personalized treatment plan, whether it's IVF, IUI, egg freezing, or other strategies, to optimize your chances of success.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ovarian reserve refers to the number and quality of eggs remaining in your ovaries. It's a key indicator of your reproductive potential. For those on a fertility journey, understanding your ovarian reserve helps your TRIO care team assess your unique situation, predict how you might respond to treatments like IVF, and tailor the most effective plan to help you achieve your family-building goals.

A low ovarian reserve indicates a reduced number of eggs, but it doesn't mean pregnancy is impossible. Many individuals with a low ovarian reserve successfully conceive with the right fertility treatments. Our specialists at TRIO are experts in developing personalized strategies, such as optimized IVF protocols or exploring donor egg options, to maximize your chances of success. We're here to guide you through every possibility.

A healthy ovarian reserve is a positive indicator, but it doesn't guarantee fertility success. Fertility is a complex process influenced by many factors, including egg quality, sperm health, uterine health, fallopian tube function, and overall health. While a good ovarian reserve is a strong foundation, your TRIO care team will conduct a thorough assessment to identify any other factors that might impact your ability to conceive and ensure a comprehensive treatment plan is in place.

Age is the most significant factor affecting both egg quantity and quality. While you're born with all your eggs, their number and quality naturally decline over time, with a more rapid decrease typically occurring after age 35. This can impact the chances of natural conception and the success rates of fertility treatments. However, at TRIO, we offer advanced treatments and personalized care plans designed to address age-related fertility challenges and help you achieve your dream of parenthood.
