Transcript: Egg Retrieval: What to Expect
- On the morning of your retrieval, you will walk up to the TRIO front desk and check-in to get a wristband.
- After receiving your wristband, a nurse will call you to the admissions/recovery area.
- Once you pass through this door, you will change into a gown and a nurse will go through your medical history and check your vitals.
- An IV line will be started in your arm. You will be given a pre-procedure medication to keep you as relaxed as possible during your procedure.
- 5 minutes before your egg retrieval, you will empty your bladder before proceeding to this procedure room.
- You will be helped onto the table and made comfortable. A blood pressure monitor will be put on your arm and an oxygen sensor on one of your fingers for monitoring throughout your retrieval.
- You will be in the procedure room for approximately 30 minutes, of which 10 minutes is the actual egg retrieval.
- The doctor will put a speculum into your vagina and will then clean the cervix. Topical freezing is placed into the cervix.
- The ultrasound probe, with a “needle guide” will be inserted into your vagina.
- The needle guide is used to line up the follicles with the probe.
- The egg retrieval needle is inserted into the guide and then is inserted into each follicle.
- The follicular fluid is drained out of each follicle.
- The fluid is passed to the embryologist.
- The egg retrieval is completed when all the follicles are drained.
- The probe is then removed and a speculum is inserted so that the doctor can check for any bleeding.
- After, you will come back out to the recovery area where your support person can wait with you, as we monitor your recovery.
- Approximately 1 hour after your procedure you will be driven home accompanied by your support person
