Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the OPUs done?
We have a private procedure room where all the OPUs are done. You will be in our recovery area before and after your procedure.
Why are patients not put to sleep for the OPU?
We have found that the local anesthetic we use works very well. The recovery time is faster and there is less risk.
Can they see my eggs on the ultrasound screen?
No. Ultrasound shows the follicles that house the eggs. Because the eggs are so small, the only way to see them is under a high-powered microscope.
How long does it take to do the retrieval?
You are in the room for 20 to 30 minutes, of which 10 minutes is the actual retrieval.
How long do I have to stay after the OPU?
Everyone reacts differently to the medications given before and during the OPU. Most patients remain in the recovery area for approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Can I leave without being able to urinate?
You can go home if you have no concerns. If you have distention or are uncomfortable, you should stay.
Can I drive after the OPU?
No. You will be given medications that can cause drowsiness, and it would not be safe for you to drive. It is important that you have someone to drive you home. It will be safe for you to drive the following day.
Do I need a few days off after retrieval?
This is usually not necessary. The day after the retrieval you could have some cramping, but most patients are comfortable to return to work the day following their OPU.
When can I resume exercising?
Depending on your post OPU instructions, it is advised to wait until you get a period before resuming vigorous exercise.
When can I have intercourse after the OPU?
We recommend waiting until after your next period.
Are there specific foods or drinks to avoid?
Maintain a healthy diet and avoid alcohol consumption.
Should I stop any essential oils or herbal medication after the retrieval?
Only use herbal medications that you have discussed with your naturopath, as some of these can affect your hormones.
Can I get a facial or a massage or dye my hair?
Yes. However, you should ensure that you are in a well-ventilated area and avoid hair dyes containing ammonia.
Can I use a hot tub or sauna?
No. Please avoid the use of hot tubs and saunas.
Can I travel after the OPU?
We recommend waiting between 7-10 days after your OPU before flying or going on long car rides.
