Understanding IVF Costs in Toronto: A Complete Guide to Pricing

Talk to a Care Navigator

When you’re considering IVF, one of the first questions that comes to mind is often about cost. And if you’ve been searching online, you’ve probably encountered a confusing mix of numbers, medical terminology, and pricing ranges that don’t quite give you the clarity you need.

You’re trying to plan for something significant—something that could change your life—and you deserve clear, transparent information. Not vague estimates or ranges so broad they’re essentially meaningless. Just honest answers about what you’re actually paying for.

That’s what this guide is here to provide. A straightforward breakdown of IVF costs at TRIO Fertility in Toronto. No medical jargon you need to decode, just clear information to help you plan and make informed decisions about your fertility journey.

Please note: We recommend speaking with a TRIO Finance Coordinator to confirm current pricing and get a personalized cost breakdown for your specific situation.

What Does a Full IVF Cycle Cost at TRIO?

A non-funded IVF cycle at TRIO costs $13,500.

This comprehensive fee includes your experienced care team, all monitoring appointments (blood tests and ultrasounds), the egg retrieval procedure, sperm preparation, IVF and/or ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), extended embryo culture, time lapse incubation, assisted reproductive technologies, electronic witnessing, and embryo freezing.

However, there’s an important component that’s not included in this base cost: medications.

Understanding Medication Costs

Medications typically range from $5,000 to $10,000+, depending on your personalized protocol. The variation in cost reflects the fact that everyone’s body responds differently to fertility medications. Some patients require higher doses or different medication combinations, and your fertility specialist won’t know your exact needs until they see how your body responds to treatment.

Your TRIO care team will work with you to develop a medication protocol tailored to your specific situation, and they’ll help you understand the expected costs before you begin.

Ontario Fertility Program: Government-Funded IVF

If you’re in Ontario, the provincial government offers significant support through the Ontario Fertility Program. This program provides funding to help eligible patients build their families, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or family status.

Who Qualifies for Funded IVF?

To be eligible for government-funded IVF, you must:

  • Be an Ontario resident with a valid OHIP card
  • Be under 43 years of age
  • Have not previously used your one funded IVF cycle

The program covers one IVF cycle per lifetime for eligible patients.

What Does Funded IVF Include?

The Ontario Fertility Program covers:

  • Up to two attempts at cycle monitoring
  • One attempt at egg retrieval
  • Embryo freezing, thawing, and culture
  • Fertilization and embryology services, including ICSI, assisted hatching, and blastocyst culture
  • One-at-a-time transfer of all embryos (fresh and frozen) from that cycle
  • One attempt at surgical sperm retrieval using certain techniques (if required)

What’s Not Covered by OHIP?

It’s important to understand that government funding doesn’t cover everything. You’ll still be responsible for:

  • All medications and drugs
  • Storage or shipping of eggs, sperm, or embryos
  • Purchase of donor sperm or eggs
  • Counselling by a psychologist or social worker
  • Various optional tests and procedures
  • Services performed on other people participating in your funded IVF cycle if they don’t hold a valid Ontario health card

Understanding Your Funded Cycle

The funded IVF cycle includes the one-at-a-time transfer of all viable embryos from one starting point to the first endpoint. This means if your cycle produces multiple embryos, you can transfer them one at a time (following the mandatory single embryo transfer policy) until all viable embryos from that funded cycle have been used.

Your funded cycle starts when you:

  • Undergo an egg retrieval, OR
  • Have a donor undergo egg retrieval for you, OR
  • Use previously-retrieved eggs (your own or donor), OR
  • Use previously-created embryos (your own or donor)

Your funded cycle ends when:

  • Two cycle monitoring attempts occur with no egg retrieval, OR
  • One failed egg retrieval occurs, OR
  • One failed surgical sperm retrieval occurs and no alternate sperm source is chosen, OR
  • Fertilization and culture of all eggs from cycle start resulted in no viable embryos to transfer, OR
  • Thawing/culture of all frozen embryos from cycle start resulted in no viable embryos to transfer, OR
  • Transfers of all viable embryos (fresh and frozen) from cycle start were performed or are no longer available

Frozen Embryo Transfer Costs

Many IVF cycles result in multiple high-quality embryos. After your first embryo transfer, any remaining embryos can be frozen for future use. If you return for a frozen embryo transfer (FET), after your private IVF cycle, the costs at TRIO are:

  • Fresh Embryo Transfer: $1,350
  • Frozen Embryo Transfer: $2,850

Medications for FET cycles typically range from $1,000 to $3,000+ depending on your protocol. This is considerably less than a full IVF cycle, which is one reason why having frozen embryos available can be both emotionally and financially beneficial.

Additional Procedures and Services

Depending on your individual circumstances and treatment plan, you may benefit from additional procedures. Here are the most common options available at TRIO:

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A)

If you’re considering genetic testing of your embryos before transfer:

  • PGT-A Biopsy: $2,350
  • PGT-A Testing per Embryo: $425

PGT-A (formerly called PGS) can be particularly valuable for patients who’ve experienced recurrent pregnancy loss or are of advanced maternal age. Your fertility specialist can help you understand whether this testing might be beneficial for your situation.

Pricing for PGT-SR and PGT-M will be discussed on an individual basis with your care team.

Advanced Sperm Selection Technologies

TRIO offers several advanced sperm selection methods that can improve outcomes in certain cases:

  • ZyMot: $450
  • AIM: $500
  • Magenta: $800 for the first cycle, $200 for subsequent cycles

Embryo Storage

Embryo storage at TRIO is complimentary for the first six months for non-funded cycles. After that, storage costs $65 per month (or any part thereof).

Other Procedures

  • Blastocyst Thaw for PGT: $500
  • Mock Transfer Cycle: $500
  • Administrative Fee for Transferring Samples Out: $400 (for eggs, embryos, or sperm)

Egg Freezing Costs

If you’re considering preserving your fertility for the future, egg freezing is an excellent option. An egg freezing cycle at TRIO costs $8,800, which includes:

  • Your experienced care team
  • All monitoring appointments (blood tests and ultrasounds)
  • Electronic witnessing
  • The egg freezing procedure
  • Egg retrieval

Medications for egg freezing typically range from $5,000 to $10,000+, depending on your personalized protocol.

Like embryo storage, egg storage is $2,000 for 5 years (due at time of freezing) or $780 annually, beginning 1 year after freezing.

Note: Government funding for fertility preservation (egg or sperm freezing) is only available for medical reasons, such as undergoing cancer treatment or gender-affirming surgery that will directly impact fertility. Social egg freezing is not covered by the Ontario Fertility Program.

Third-Party Reproduction

If you’re building your family through egg donation, sperm donation, or working with a gestational carrier, the costs at TRIO include:

  • Egg Donor Cycle: $14,000
  • Recipient Cycle: $2,850
  • Gestational Carrier: $2,850
  • Egg Donor Screening: $3,000
  • Gestational Carrier Screening: $1,500

These fees are in addition to the standard additional services listed above (medications, testing, storage, etc.).

The Ontario Fertility Program is available for all forms of infertility, including non-medical infertility, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or family status. For IUI, the program covers services for patients using donor sperm but doesn’t cover the cost to purchase donor sperm. For IVF with egg or sperm donors, eligibility varies according to your unique situation. TRIO’s third-party coordinator can discuss your details to see if and how you may qualify.

Diagnostic Testing

Most diagnostic testing is covered by OHIP. However, there are a few tests that aren’t included:

IUI Treatment Costs

If you’re starting with Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) before moving to IVF, OHIP covers the monitoring (blood tests and ultrasounds) for IUI cycles. The Ontario Fertility Program covers IUI services for eligible patients with no set limit for the number of attempts. However, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Sperm Wash for IUI: $775 per cycle ($100 for the second insemination if indicated)
  • Medications: $300 to $2,000+ depending on your protocol

Sperm Services

For patients who need sperm freezing or storage at TRIO:

  • Sperm Freezing: $500 per sample
  • MAP Freezing: $500 for up to 4 samples frozen within 2 weeks
  • Sperm Storage: $65 per month (or any part thereof)
  • Sperm Aspiration: $750 + physician fee
  • Male Factor Condoms: $35 per pack

Making IVF More Affordable

Understanding the full cost of IVF is important, but so is knowing your options for making treatment more manageable financially. Here are some avenues to explore:

Ontario Fertility Tax Credit

Ontario residents can claim an additional 25% provincial tax credit on eligible fertility-related expenses, up to a maximum credit of $5,000 per year. This means you can claim the credit on up to $20,000 in eligible fertility expenses annually.

This provincial credit is in addition to the federal Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC), which can provide significant tax relief. Combined, these credits can help offset a meaningful portion of your out-of-pocket fertility treatment costs.

Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC)

In Canada, you can claim fertility treatment expenses through the Medical Expense Tax Credit on both your federal and provincial tax returns. To qualify, expenses must be paid within any 12-month period, and only the portion not reimbursed by extended health plans can be claimed.

Eligible fertility medical expenses may include:

  • Assisted reproductive technology procedures (IVF, ICSI, sperm extraction, egg freezing)
  • Frozen storage fees for eggs, sperm, or embryos
  • Donor eggs, sperm, or surrogacy-related expenses
  • Prescribed medications with a DIN number required for fertility treatments
  • Non-OHIP-covered medical tests and laboratory procedures (including PGT)
  • Materials needed to administer prescribed medications (needles, syringes)
  • Services from approved healthcare providers (naturopaths, acupuncturists, psychologists)

Ineligible expenses typically include:

  • Over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements
  • Insurance premiums and cosmetic procedures
  • General health services (gym memberships, massages)

Tips for claiming medical expenses:

  • Keep detailed records of all fertility-related expenses throughout the year
  • Save all receipts and request a year-end printout from the TRIO pharmacy
  • Include all medical and dental expenses when filing your taxes
  • Keep copies of all submitted receipts in case of an audit

Employer Benefits

Many employer benefit packages now include some coverage for fertility treatments. Check with your HR department to understand what’s available to you. Even partial coverage can make a meaningful difference.

Some plans may cover diagnostic testing, while others include medication costs or treatment procedures. Consider coordinating benefits if you and your partner both have insurance coverage—this strategy can maximize your overall reimbursement.

Important questions to ask your insurance provider:

  • Does my plan cover fertility medications?
  • What specific fertility procedures are covered?
  • Is there a lifetime maximum for fertility treatments?
  • Are there any exclusions I should know about?
  • Do I need pre-authorization for certain treatments?

Note that TRIO doesn’t currently direct bill insurance companies. You’ll need to pay for services upfront and submit claims for reimbursement. You can request a detailed receipt from TRIO after payment to submit to your insurance provider.

Financing Options

TRIO has partnered with Beautifi Solutions to offer flexible monthly payment plans, allowing you to focus on building your family rather than worrying about upfront costs.

Beautifi offers:

  • Simple, fast application (less than 3 minutes, won’t impact your credit score)
  • Flexible payment options with terms ranging from 6 months to 6 years
  • Access to up to $50,000 in financing
  • Zero money down—Beautifi pays TRIO directly
  • Fixed monthly payments for easier budgeting
  • Open loans (pay off part or all anytime without penalties)

Speaking with a TRIO Finance Counsellor can help you understand what financing options are available and what might work best for your situation.

Multi-Cycle Planning

If you’re considering multiple IVF cycles, ask your TRIO Finance Counsellor about options that might be available to help make treatment more affordable.

Planning Your IVF Budget at TRIO

When planning your budget for IVF at TRIO, consider these realistic estimates:

For a single non-funded IVF cycle:

  • Base cycle cost: $13,500
  • Medications: $5,000–$10,000
  • Total: $18,500–$23,500

If you need additional procedures:

  • Add genetic testing: +$2,350 (biopsy) + $425 per embryo
  • Add advanced sperm selection: +$450–$500
  • Potential total: $21,000–$30,000+

For frozen embryo transfer:

  • FET procedure: $2,850
  • Medications: $1,000–$3,000
  • Total: $3,850–$5,850

Potential tax relief:

  • Federal METC: Varies based on income and expenses
  • Ontario Fertility Tax Credit: Up to $5,000 per year
  • Combined tax credits can provide significant savings

These estimates help you understand the financial commitment involved. Remember that every patient’s journey is unique, and your actual costs will depend on your specific treatment plan. Please confirm current pricing with a TRIO Finance Counsellor, as fees are subject to change.

Payment Policy at TRIO

TRIO requires payment in full before you start the stimulation phase of your treatment cycle. While this might seem like a significant requirement, it actually helps you plan more effectively. You’ll know exactly what you need to have ready before beginning treatment, which can reduce financial stress during your cycle.

Beyond the Medical Costs

It’s also worth considering some of the indirect costs associated with IVF treatment:

  • Time away from work for appointments and procedures
  • Transportation to and from the clinic
  • Parking fees
  • Emotional support resources (counselling, support groups)
  • Childcare if you have other children

While these costs are typically smaller than the medical expenses, they’re still part of your overall investment in building your family.

Questions to Ask Your TRIO Finance Counsellor

When you meet with a TRIO Finance Counsellor, consider asking:

  • What are the current prices for my specific treatment plan?
  • Am I eligible for government-funded IVF through the Ontario Fertility Program?
  • What payment plans are available through Beautifi or other options?
  • How do I maximize my tax credits for fertility expenses?
  • Are there any upcoming changes to pricing I should know about?
  • What happens financially if my cycle needs to be cancelled?
  • How do refunds work if applicable?
  • What’s the timeline for payment?
  • Are there any costs not included in the estimates you’ve provided?

Having these conversations early helps you plan more effectively and reduces surprises later in your treatment journey.

The Value of Transparent Pricing

One of the most challenging aspects of planning for IVF can be the uncertainty around costs. TRIO’s commitment to transparent pricing means you can make informed decisions about your fertility treatment. You’ll know what you’re paying for, what’s included, and what additional costs might arise based on your specific needs.

This transparency allows you to focus on what matters most—your journey to parenthood—rather than worrying about unexpected expenses.

While the costs are significant, TRIO’s experienced team is committed to providing you with the highest quality care and supporting you through every step of your journey.
