What to Expect and How to Prepare
If you’re ready to move forward as a TRIO patient, a 30-minute phone appointment with a Nurse Practitioner is a practical place to start. It allows us to review your history, answer your questions, and outline clear next steps—often including fertility testing at TRIO and reviewing those results with a fertility specialist (REI).
Many patients choose this option because fertility care is time-sensitive, and waiting to access a family doctor referral can delay getting started.
Eligibility
This Nurse Practitioner phone appointment is for people who have a valid OHIP card and are actively trying to conceive.
Do I Need a Referral for the Nurse Practitioner Call?
No. You do not need a family doctor referral to book the Nurse Practitioner phone appointment. You just need a valid OHIP card.
If you decide to move forward, the Nurse Practitioner will arrange the referral needed for an appointment with a TRIO fertility specialist (REI), so you can keep the process moving.
What to Expect on the Nurse Practitioner Phone Appointment
Your Nurse Practitioner will focus on understanding your situation and helping you take the right next steps. The call typically includes:
- A review of your fertility goals and timeline
- Key medical and reproductive history (and partner history, if applicable)
- Any testing you’ve already had completed
- Discussion of initial fertility testing that may be helpful
- A clear explanation of the typical TRIO pathway, including how the referral for an REI appointment is handled
You’ll also have time for questions—especially about what happens next and what the timeline can look like.
What You’ll Receive After Booking
After you book, your health card will be requested and you will be sent medical history forms to complete before your appointment:
- One for you
- One for your spouse/partner (if applicable)
Completing these forms in advance helps your Nurse Practitioner spend the appointment on your questions and next steps.
How to Prepare
To make the most of your 30 minutes, please have available:
- OHIP card(s) for all partners (required before appointment)
- A list of current medications and supplements
- Any prior fertility testing results you have available
If you don’t have copies of prior results, that’s okay—share what you know, and we’ll guide you.
What Happens After the Appointment?
Next steps are individualized, but many patients move through a sequence like this:
- Testing May Be Arranged at TRIO
Based on your history, your Nurse Practitioner may arrange testing requisitions to be completed at TRIO. - You Complete Testing
Some testing depends on timing (for example, certain tests may be scheduled around cycle day). Your care team will provide instructions based on what’s ordered. - Appointment Is Arranged for a Fertility Specialist (REI)
Your Nurse Practitioner will arrange your testing and book you in to see an REI to review your results. - Results Review & Discussion
Your REI appointment is where you’ll review your results in detail and discuss the treatment options that make sense for you.
