After more than 30 years of caring for patients and advancing IVF research, Dr. Bob Casper is beginning a new chapter focused on the future of fertility medicine.
Dr. Bob Casper, founding partner and former Scientific Director of TRIO Fertility, has retired from clinical practice to focus on his world-renowned research in IVF and fertility medicine.
A Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility Specialist (REI) for more than 30 years, Dr. Casper established the Toronto Centre for Advanced Reproductive Technology (TCART) in 1993 as one of Canada’s first non-hospital IVF clinics. In 2015, TCART merged with LifeQuest Centre for Reproductive Medicine to form TRIO Fertility—now one of Canada’s largest and most comprehensive fertility clinics.
Dr. Casper’s commitment to clinical excellence, research, and compassionate patient care has helped shape TRIO and inspired colleagues, staff, and many new physicians specializing in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

At the Forefront of Reproductive Medicine
After graduating as a medical doctor, Dr. Casper earned his Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Soon after, he was awarded a Medical Research Council of Canada Fellowship for training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility—a relatively new medical subspecialty at the time—at the University of California, San Diego.
There, he trained under the direction of Dr. Sam Yen, a world-renowned endocrine researcher. Dr. Casper was subsequently certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Reproductive Endocrinology.
“When I moved back to Canada after my training in San Diego, California, our team started one of the first Canadian IVF programs. We were learning and researching as we went and published many new clinical and embryology papers that contributed to the innovation and advancement of fertility treatment over the years.”
What Is Clinical Research in Fertility Medicine?
Clinical research plays an important role in advancing fertility care. It helps improve patient experiences, develop new treatments, and support better clinical outcomes.
“In fertility medicine, clinical research projects deal directly with improving both the patient experience and clinical outcomes. Our clinical research – both at TCART and at TRIO – has given us an international reputation, and fertility specialists worldwide look to our team to conduct research that is aimed at improving the practice of IVF in Canada, North America and beyond,” explained Dr. Casper.
“Discovering clinical modifications and developing new treatments that may improve IVF outcomes continue to be tremendously exciting and rewarding for me.”
A Distinguished Career in Fertility Medicine and Clinical Research
Dr. Casper is Professor Emeritus and former Head of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto.
He holds cross-appointments in the Departments of Physiology and Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, and at the Institute of Medical Sciences. He continues as a Senior Investigator at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Casper also founded and continues as Medical Director of the Insception LifeBank Cord Blood Programme.
Recognition for a Career of Excellence
Dr. Casper is an honorary member of the Middle East Fertility Society. In 2001, he was awarded the Health Silver Medal of the Ministry of Health, Republic of Lebanon.
In 2004, he received the CFAS Award of Excellence for Lifetime Research Achievement. In 2012, Dr. Casper received the Excellence in Research Award from APOG, the Association of Academic Professionals in Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada.
For more than three years in a row, Dr. Casper was named a “Top Doctor” in his field in Toronto by his peers.
A Leader in IVF Science and Clinical Research
Dr. Casper’s research activities have been continuously funded by the MRC/CIHR. He was awarded an MRC scholarship and received a joint CIHR/INSERM Visiting Scientist award during a sabbatical in the laboratory of Professor Edwin Milgrom in Paris.
Dr. Casper has authored more than 300 papers, which have been cited more than 18,000 times on Google Scholar.
His continuing areas of research include:
- mitochondria in reproductive aging
- endometriosis
- endometrial receptivity
- preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy
A Lasting Commitment to Patients and Progress
“After many years of caring for patients with infertility, I have decided to retire from this deeply rewarding part of my practice. Few experiences have been more fulfilling than helping people achieve their dream of completing their families,” said Bob Casper.
“I will always be grateful for the trust and confidence patients placed in me during one of the most challenging times in their lives,” he continued.
“It has also been a privilege to be able to participate in advancing the field of assisted reproductive technology with my colleagues at TCART and then at TRIO. These innovations have allowed us to help many more people with infertility achieve their goals. The focus for me in the coming years will be on continuing these research activities in this amazing field,” continued Dr. Casper.
How Has Fertility Medicine Changed Over the Years?
We asked Dr. Casper how he has seen fertility medicine change throughout his career.
Q: How Has Fertility Medicine Changed Over the Years?
“Since I’ve been involved in IVF, there have been too many changes to enumerate, and I have been fortunate to have participated in some of them. These include the introduction of vaginal ultrasound for monitoring, the switch from laparoscopic egg retrieval under general anesthesia to vaginal ultrasound guided egg retrieval under intravenous sedation, the development of ICSI for severe male factor, the development of subcutaneous fertility medications, the use of letrozole for ovulation induction, GnRH analogues and oral progestins to prevent a premature LH surge, GnRH agonist triggers to prevent OHSS, successful embryo and oocyte cryopreservation, PGT-A and M, AI for assessment of oocyte competence and improved methods for determining endometrial receptivity, just to list a few!!”
Where Is Clinical Research Headed Next?
Dr. Casper also shared his thoughts on the future of fertility research and care.
Q: Where Is Clinical Research Headed Next?
“I think future research will focus on new methods to rejuvenate eggs in older patients, finger-prick or salivary hormone assays to avoid venipuncture, non-invasive methods for PGT-A, improved medical management of fibroids and endometriosis, new sperm selection techniques that could allow IUI at home, nanobot technology for embryo transfer and IVF — plus or minus the incorporation of AI in many aspects of diagnosis and treatment including automated and robotic IVF laboratories.”
